A warm evening in Hilo

I didn't take any photos. If you want to see photos of our Opening go to the gallery blog. I've been trying to upload a video that Everett shot of our gallery, but for whatever reason it doesn't want to come up. I'll have to try later.

Meanwhile...

Hilo hasn't been as rainy this year (climate change?) so we've had a great summer. We had a nice run of strawberry guavas (which a lot of people consider a weed tree because they seem to be taking over and smothering other plants out). From our yard--we made our own juice. But with all the work of harvesting (like coffee farmers), grinding and filtering out seeds, to get a little bit of juice, well, it's good it's seasonal. Later the sweeter yellow ones will come to fruit and it will be this all over again...

Art Music and Dance at Kalani

Every few months Kalani hosts an art event. Last night was the winter celebration.

The Small Show

Here's the beginning of our Small Show... we decided to make more affordable art for these tough economic times.

Merrie Monarch in Hilo

This week is the biggest Hawaiian Hula competition in the world. It happens in Hilo and we have more visitors here than probably at any other time. After a day of festivities at the gallery (me painting--that made it sooo festive) Arthur talked me into going to see the festival. I usually watch it on TV. You who are reading this can also see it online at http://thehawaiichannel.com.

On the first day it's more of an international day which means a big halau from Tokyo performs 1/2 the program. The other international performers were from New Zealand (Maori dancers). The finale were Sonny Ching's halau from Oahu. I should add that the whole show started with the procession by the Royal Court, followed by chanting by the Kanaka'ole sisters, the venerable halau of Hawaii.

Try to catch tonight's (4/13/07). It's the most exciting with traditional performances by male (kane) and female (wahine) dancers in competition. It's like 6 hours long, a marathon for the audience as well. I will be watching from my sofa. Tomorrow night is the last night with modern dance performances.

Jeff's house of Arthur's art

Thanksgiving morning AJ and I went to his friend Jeff's house. It was like going to an Arthur Johnsen museum house. Jeff has a nice collection. Someone at the beach was suggesting that Lower Puna have an artist studio tour. I told Arthur that a tour of homes with just his paintings would be an interesting twist since he is so well collected.



























Jeff also has a great teacup collection.
