Lunar Eclipse

Did anyone catch last night's full moon lunar eclipse?? It was so amazing. And right on Arthur's birthday. The moon turned this gorgeous reddish blackish, hard to describe but beautiful coloring. I wish I'd photographed it but it was around midnight and I was too tired. But I did go outside to see it. Maybe someone did photograph it, I'm sure one could google it and find something. Here's my quick photoshop impression...

After the storm

These were taken last week after the storms. It didn't seem like much but the huge waves actually wreaked havoc to the beach. We lost even more sand. In previous photos the tree stump (that Arthur is doing his yoga on) was upright and it's drastically uprooted now.

The following is my favorite dead tree that is my marker for when I swim and also a great sketch subject... It's also a shocking 'dipstick' of how much sand we've lost since the tree was once living.

Gecko scooter

I've found a great way to gently coax little gecko out of the house. Using my Swiffer. I just nudge a little guy along (they only take 5 steps at a time for some reason) until he's by the door. I quickly open the door, nudge him out and close the door before he or any of his relatives can run back in.

Latest Art

Here are a couple of examples of what I've been working on this week, a book about baseball for Brown Publishing. The art director remembered me from many years ago (luckily) and was glad to be able to find me. Thank goodness for google...

Hurricane update

Seems like it was a nonevent... It's 6 pm and no hurricane. The scariest thing was the earthquake last night, 5.4 centered in Kalapana which is a scant 4 miles from here...

We did have some nice huge waves. Here are some photos from yesterday and today (gloomier). My brave friends went in the water yesterday for some exciting rides. I have my limits though it looked like they had so much fun.

I'm just happy i didn't lose any power. I'm still trying to finish my projects.... sigh.

Here's a very cool link though to a satellite view of the hurricane: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/tpac/loop-vis.html

looks bigger from space.

Hurricane satellite photo

This is put out by the government. Our island looks pretty small next to the hurricane....

Hurricane coming...

I got a call today from Craig's brother. He's in Hana and was very concerned about the impending hurricane. My friends here didn't seem so concerned. But in seeing the pictures of Flossie as she whirls her way over her path is looking very wide....They are now saying that it will mostly affect South Point. I know we'll be hit with a lot of rain and wind. I filled (2) 5 gal. jugs with water. That's my preparedness. Oh, and I backed up my computer. I'm somewhat concerned there because I have an assignment due Wednesday morning... I hope the hurricane doesn't do anything to our radio towers.

Here's the link to find out what's going on with the hurricane: http://co.hawaii.hi.us/cd/message.htm

Puna in Japan correction

On Sunday I took my Japanese friends to the Maku'u Farmer's Market and who do we see performing there but our friend Puna!! So I got the real story, he's not going to Osaka, it's Asakusa, still no name but at least we have the place right. Asakusa in Tokyo. Puna played and my friends danced (hula) for an appreciative crowd.

With us there Puna probably felt like he was already in Japan.
I believe Puna is at this moment on a plane bound for you know where!

Miki

My Japanese friend Miki has been staying with me a few days. Today she had to go to Kalani to do some gardening work. This way she earns Kalani dollars with which she can spend in their shop or buying classes like yoga or even meals. I photographed her getting ready for the bike ride over...

Puna in Japan

My friends Puna and Kawika with Puna's cousin Lei are going to be singing in a club in Osaka! and I just found out they will also perform in Tokyo. I'm sorry about the lack of details but I have no idea where they are playing. Maybe a google search for Hawaiian music in those vast cities in August would produce some info... But congrats to them for the tour!!

Breakfast at Arthur's

I didn't mean to stop in at breakfast time, in fact I waited until 11 so that it wouldn't be breakfast or lunch time to stop in at Arthur's. I needed to cut a mat for a piece of art and my mat cutter happens to be at Arthur's studio. But when I stopped in he was busy making BRUNCH so what could I do? I couldn't refuse a delicious meal with my friends...
