Long Drive to Lapahoehoe
We took a little too long to decide to meet fellow Hilo artists for this week's plein air session, even though they made it for noon on so people could get up there (it's about 60 miles away for us in lower Puna). We were supposed to go to a 5000 acre ranch but we got to the meeting place at 12:30 and no one was around. So we picnicked on the lawn and then went down to Lapahoehoe Point (location of a tsunami that wiped out a school in 1946), just around the corner.
We had a quick swim with the local kids.
While I drove, Arthur read to me from his Cezanne book. We'd been exploring the fauve movements and now Arthur was onto the Father of all that, Cezanne. With that in mind I painted the lava rocks red (my latest color of the moment)--I had fun. I don't know if Arthur did. Neither of us like those long drives, even in paradise...
